Recently my raw-water cooled Yanmar 3QM30 diesel engine had been overheating during trips and fairly suddenly after years of reliable performance. The engine idled without problems but increasingly overheated when run for extended periods at continuous revs (only water temp sensor). Engine maintenance has always been done on schedule. Fuel and air filters, thermostats and water pump all checked as ok. No signs of water intake blockages, insufficient air, compression issues at start-up, contaminated fuel or engine water leaks. Just noticeably greater engine temperatures and more stream than normal from the wet exhaust. With over 8000 hours on the clock and no obvious cause for the overheating, I was beginning to think a replacement engine was on the cards.
No not yet! The engine idles ok and there is no starting or exhaust problem, so more investigation was needed. The air intake and exhaust manifolds were removed and cleaned – not a backpressure problem. The cylinder head end anode plates were removed. Some calcification was coating the head walls, but wait a minute shouldn’t there be water circulation pores between the cylinder head and engine block?? They should have been visible but were solidly blocked by calcification!! This was clearly contributing to the overheating. I was both surprised and thankful to have found this before major engine damage had occurred and not in a situation when the boat was solely dependent on motoring. The regular use of vinegar soaking/flushing clearly hadn’t kept the smaller cooling passages clear. Even though raw water was being pumped through the engine block, cooler water for one of the dual flows was not circulating around the cylinder head.
So how to unblock the pores ? End pores could be reached but there was no access to physically unblock all pores. Removing the cylinder head would only be considered a last resort. Dissolving the buildups would be less abrasive and more complete. Increase the frequency of vinegar flushes? No, solution proven to be too weak. I considered stepping up the strength to 10%+ hydrochloric acid but ruled that out due to the risk of acid damaging the engine’s rubber impeller, seals and hoses. After canvassing the situation with other boat owners, one owner suggested using Salt-X. I hadn’t heard of Salt-X, but following some investigation and discussion of my situation with the supplier, I decided it would be worth trying.
First use was filling the engine’s cooling system with a 30% Salt-X solution and leaving it to soak for a week. At the end of that week the brown colouration of the initial flushed discharge clearly showed something had changed. During a 30min run at the mooring at varying revs the engine operated as expected, with no unusual signs or sounds and the wet exhaust discharge quickly returned to its expected colour. The operating temperature seemed cooler for the time but the run was too short to gauge any real change.
The sequence of draining, refilling the cooling system with the Salt-X mixture and leaving it for the week was repeated for a further 3 weeks. A similar coloured discharge occurred after each end-of- week flushing. After the 3rd week (4th flush) I noticed small white fragments were flushed out – yes! good to see! A check of the head cooling space showed it to be clean and the visible pores were open. The head bolt tensions were also checked and found to be ok. I have since taken the yacht for an extended run and found the operating temperature, particularly around the cylinder head, to be thankfully much cooler. I’m confident Salt-X has removed the cause of the engine’s overheating.
Out of this whole experience, I’ll now be using Salt-X as a regular maintenance agent. Salt-X has provided a very effective solution to resolve what could have turned into a major engine problem to fix. Roll on the warmer sailing weather!

G'day I've been a recreational fisherman for the last 20 odd years and have used all types of boat and motor cleaning agents to maintain my boat and fishing gear. One of the biggest problems I have found in Darwin is that after a day on the water the salt build up harden’s like rock under the extreme temperatures in the Top End. I have not found a product that could dissolve the salt build up completely on application until I was introduced to the Salt X range of products by other fishermen 18 months ago.
After applying Salt Buster 50 to the outside of my boat and motor I could see the thick layer of salt disappear without damaging the paint work making it easier to clean the boat. I also use Salt X to flush my motor and have been very impressed with the results in keeping the internal parts motor in top condition. By using both of these products I have reduced my time spent cleaning the hull and reduced the cost of my outboard maintenance. After seeing first hand what Salt X can achieve, I now use this product on everything that is exposed to the Salt including my reels and rods and 4WD and around the home on my out door furniture. Yea well, I don't go much with testimonials as they are usually written by some ones mate just to help out so I really don't know how to convince you that this one is a dinky die straight up no bull provable report.
Firstly I am going to keep buying and using Salt X, if you don't then it's your loss.
Salt X was first offered to me as an engine flush for my 200hp Yamaha outboard by Westcoast Commercial Marine.
I have got to be honest and say that it took a while before I bothered to use it for that purpose.......like months. But I did end up using it on my fishing gear about 3 months after I first purchased it, and here is the reason I eventually tried it.
In October 08 I was preparing for a one month fishing trip to East Timor, (my friend has a charter boat up there) I was at the local Tackle shop (Carrington Tackle and Marine) speaking to the proprietor Barry Greaves when I was asked by a supplier of his if I would be willing to take some of his equipment with me to try out, this happened to be a rod and reel combination that I considered to be a bit on he fragile (pooncey) side. I took up the challenge provided I was not held liable for loss or damage.
He gave me a Gladiator Kor Game rod that pulls apart in to two pieces at the but end and a (would you believe) pink all aluminium banax immense 60 overhead fishing reel and 1,000yards of 100lb braid.
I can give a testimonial on that lot too; I can assure you because I tried unsuccessfully to destroy it trying to catch Russian subs covered in scales. (Pooncey looking stuff was stronger than me.) I also took my trusty Braid Buster rod and my Shimano Trinidad 50 reel. All up total value with line was well over $2000. What I did was not excusable; I used and abused all of this equipment for the whole 34 days that I was in Timor.
Not once did any of it get touched by fresh water, just salt water, sun, heat and humidity. Even when it was put away out of sight on occasion it was stuffed in to a damp shower recess on the boat.
As you might imagine I was full of remorse and regret when I returned to Perth and assessed the condition of my equipment. I was disappointed that the Gladiator rod and reel had returned in one piece because it proved me wrong (and I really hate that), however I consoled myself that my Shimano reel was cosmetically in much better shape, embarrassingly salty and grotty looking but at least I could see the screw heads in it, I sure couldn't see them clearly on the banax reel, it looked stuffed.
I was definitely keeping the Gladiator rod and happy to pay for it but I was left pondered about returning the reel, I have a continence and decided that I must at least make it presentable to return even if I could only say that it suffered a corrosion problem but other than that it was bullet proof, (which it was) so I decided to soak all this stuff in fresh water to try to soften the salt and corrosion up so that I could strip them down and make them presentable.
While I was filling the good old white bucket with water I pondered about getting the old detergent out when I remembered that I had some of that Salt X stuff and deciding I had nothing to loose I splashed a bit in to the bucket, in went the reels and the comment of "what have I got to loose" was muttered.
18 odd hours later I stuck my hand in to the bucket, a rather gooey looking substance was floating just near the surface. My immediate thoughts were that the reels had been dissolved by this stuff and I really should have read the instructions not forgetting to mention the "oh no,what's it going to do to my hand?"
Much to my immediate relief my groping hand found the reels, gingerly I pulled them out and simply put, I stared at them in disbelief, awed and over the bloody moon happy. These two reels had come out of that solution looking as new (bar the scratches) and corrosion free, they even smelt new. I waited until they had dried off and they still looked new. Look people, I could seriously go on and on so I will just sum it up with what I have noticed over the last 3 months of experimenting and pushing the boundaries with it.
I wash my ali boat with it. Stops the bare ali going white and makes the paint look good.
I clean my fishing equipment with it and that includes lures, hooks, line and you name it.
I wash the foam filled vinyl boat cushions in it, I flush my out board with it.
I use it to free up corroded aluminium fittings, it even cleans up old brass swivels.
I do not rinse off any thing with fresh water after it cops a dose of Salt X. No need
I believe that it does not harm mono or braid fishing lines or any other material for that matter
I even wash the salt off my prescription glasses.
I still have not read the instructions yet but I was told that it is environmentally friendly and supposedly harmless if swallowed......not sure about that one, but it really does make your hands nice and smooth if you have had them in and out of salt water all day.
Must ask the question here. Why don't they use a crop duster to spray the salt affected areas of the Australian rural districts? I recon it would fix it.
I use it, I wont stop using it and like the Honda add says "it simply works"Here are some before and afters of an Alvey winch mount. I soaked it in a really diluted mixture of Salt-X for a few days. You can see by the dates the difference Salt-X has made to the winch. Howard Lord

This product is bloody good. I operate a Sea Ray with duel BMW Diesels and have set up an automatic salt water cooling flush out system so when I come in I hook up the fresh water hose to the system and it flushes out the motors from a tank I have installed. It is just a matter of turning off the sea cocks and turning on the flush out cocks. The vessel is also stored on a dry air dock, so I have no contact with the salt water. Keep up the good products!

Dear Jen,
As you may or may not be aware I have my vessel moored at the Tin Can Bay Marina.
Just yesterday, 10/3/09, I was introducing the newly arrived marine mechanic (Rodney !!!!!!) in shed 4 at the marina, which I took my vessel to for an annual service.
I explained I flushed out the BMW Diesels with your solution after each use, he was very impressed with the results and enquired after your address as he has many vessels that are in need of some love.
Might pay to give the Tin Can Bay Marina a call and get his contact details

“Since I have introduced Salt-X to members I am surprised with some of the uses, they range from coating aluminum windows at a beach shack to stop corrosion by dropping hooks and lures into a made up solution after a weekends fishing trip. I had to carry out some salvage work on a locals 4 WD bogged in the surf, all my tools (shifters, pliers and screwdrivers were submersed for a few days, I just soaked them in a Salt-X solution for a few hours and they are as good as gold, better than the 4WD.”

I thought I would send some pictures of my recent experience with Salt-X. I have used the product in the past and did not hesitate to use it for my current project, a 2001 Searay powered by a mercruiser and raw water cooled, the boat was moored therefore no flushing of the engine took place. The water heater was not a pretty sight and when I removed the hoses, I found these to be choked with salt (see attached photo 1). My marine mechanic upon seeing this advised me to purchase a new raw water pump, a new recirculating pump, new manifolds and risers which I did. I wanted to make sure I flushed and left salt-x in the engine for at least a week. I bypassed the water heater and using the flush adapter, followed the instructions and flushed the engine leaving salt-x in there far around 2 weeks. We then pulled the risers and manifolds off and no salt residue, the raw water pump was removed and the recirc pump removed – no signs of salt (see pictures) and these actually did not require replacing. I have installed fresh water cooling and will be running a salt-x mixture in the fresh water side for some time to eliminate and further residue.

“I use Salt-X to flush my Mercruiser engines. My mechanic tells me that this is a great way to extend the life of my engines by removing built up traces of salt and corrosion inside the seawater side of my engines. It will extend the working life of my gear and improve resale value for the future. To me, this is cheap insurance for my valuable boat.”

“My 140hp outboard motor had bad salt crystallization on the lower leg built up over 800hrs running and nothing I tried budged it. I thought that I'd just have to live with it but a mate told me about a product called SALT-X he'd heard about and thought that I should give it a go. I spoke to Jen Harris from SALT-X and she said that I should also flush my motor with SALT-X as any build up in the water galleries would be removed. I applied SALT-X directly on the outside of my outboard leg and it came up like it was new again. Also after flushing my motor with it a few times, the tell tail now is much stronger due to I think, SALT-X cleaning things out in the water jackets. I'd recommend SALT-X to anyone that wants to get optimum life out of their outboard.”
Scott Powyer - Wellington NSW
I took my Quintrex Hornet 435 to the Victoria River in the N.T. for a 12 day fishing trip. The conditions were extremely harsh in very dirty tidal water. My motor leg was white from the salt build up. With 40 deg heat, the salt dried on each day leaving a thicker coating on the motor, boat and trailer. On returning the lot was left in the shed for 2 months without washing.
The damage to the boat was so bad that I considered using a panel beater. I'd tried everything including car polish, but it wouldn't remove the build up around the weld joints.
I read an article in Club Marine magazine and decided to try the Salt-X products. To see the boat now you'd swear I spent 3 days polishing it! The motor looks brand new, the galvanised trailer is great, I'm wrapped. SaltBuster is fantastic stuff. I used the Auto Mix unit to flush out the motor with Salt-X and it made it so much easier. I wished I'd taken a before and after photo. I won't go anywhere without Salt-X and SaltBuster again. I can't praise it highly enough.

...I've tried Salt-X in a variety of applications in my fishing and outboard motor world. These include painting concentrate on threadline reel bail rollers and game fishing roller runners which were jammed up with salt crystals to FREE them; and to remove unsightly salt crystals embedded into the exterior of outboard brands. I'm amazed at the results.

“You won’t believe it! I know I didn’t. My old reel had years of salt build up and corrosion and is now spotless after one overnight soak in the Salt-X solution. It’s the best thing I’ve seen to stop salt corrosion.”

...I own a 1937 Coota with a 1934 inboard motor, which I flush out with Salt-X in a plastic tank. After pumping out the seawater, I turn on the Salt-X mix until it comes through the exhaust, then I turn off the motor leaving the Salt-X inside the engine. This only takes a few minutes and removes any salt from around my motor.
I’m pleased Salt-X protects my motor from salt corrosion.

…I recently purchased a 31’ Marina which needs a fair bit of work and cleaning. The Salt-Buster has cleaned up the boat well, so now I’m going to soak my old anchor chain in Salt-X to clean it up too!

G'day, I noticed a testimonal for a chap with a 31' Mariner. I had two exchangers with massive build up. No longer any problems since using the product. I only need to show friends the pictures and they start asking about the product.

Hi Neil and Jen,
I just wanted you to know that I didn’t realise just how good Salt-x is, until I used up my first 1 litre bottle. I had followed the instructions each time when cleaning the boat, flushed the motor and rinsed the fishing reels along with all of our rods. No rust or corrosion ever appeared so that was that.
It was only when I had run out of Salt-X and mistakenly thought, “no worries Bob, there’s no corrosion on anything so I don’t need to buy anymore Salt-X”. Very big mistake! Within seven days I saw the difference, on the previous Sunday I had cleaned up everything with no Salt-X just water and soap.
Being a busy business man I didn’t have time to check the boat during the week but on the following Saturday, when I was preparing the boat and the fishing gear for last Sunday, low and behold I got the shock of my life, salt was on everything! The boat had patches of crusty salt everywhere, but the biggest shock was my prized reels, the salt had started to grow on the mono lines! I immediately rinsed the reels again and gave them a good wash but it came back again! I hadn’t seen this for so long and my immediate reaction was “I hope the motor is ok”. And went into panic mode.
Thank you for the new supply of Salt-X, I will be applying it to everything this Saturday to once again get rid of the salt build up and corrosion damage.
So for anyone who is a non believer and not using Salt-X, think about it this way. I’m a business who deals with income and expenses all day, I appreciate how much it costs to run and maintain equipment, I paid a lot of dollars to get my boat and good gear, I’m a hard core fisho but commonsense dictates that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure - as my old Grandfather would say.
It cost just $59.00 for my 4 Lt concentrate but $300 for just one of my reels multiply that by 6, $20,000 for my boat and $12,000 for the motor, not to mention my Wilson Live Fiber Rods!.
I consider Salt-x an insurance policy for the future protection of my fishing and lifestyle assets and besides I don’t want my motor dyeing 20 kilometers out to sea because of salt corrosion damage.
If you are thinking of using Salt-X but are unsure that it works call me, I’ll give you a heads up on what it’s costing you not to use it.

I spray The Reel Spray on each rod and reel after every fishing charter. It's easy maintenance, saving me time and money. Being water based there is no problems with the lines, hooks or lures. It's the best product I have found to do the job. All three products are now an essential part of my maintenance programme giving me great results with easy application. Colin Hombusch |

... My local dive shop has used Salt-X as a integral part of servicing my regulators for some years. Now I have my own supply of Salt-X and SaltBuster!
When I come home from a diving trip, I soak my wetsuit, polypropylene suit, boots, hood and gloves in the bath overnight in SaltBuster, then rise them in fresh water. My BCD gets a similar treatment. This maintenance program keeps all my gear in top condition. I now use SaltBuster to wash my 4WD and you can really see the difference it makes after just one wash!

This is a picture of a Circulation Water Pump for a Kubota. They soaked for 4 days in Buster 50 with a half mix of water solution.

My truck is designed to transport our horses and accommodate the family at campdrafts and shows. The family and friends use the back section not only to get the best views but also to sleep in. The smell of horses manure and urine can get strong especially in hot weather, which makes sleeping unpleasant and unhealthy. I now spray ODOUR BUSTER on the floor and walls after sweeping out the manure. It removes all odours completely. It is easy to use and the results are immediate.
I feel confident using ODOUR BUSTER around my family and animals. Being water based, it's not slippery, dries fast and kills any bacteria. My wife Netty, thinks it's excellent, she guarantees it 100%. At the Dalby Stock Horse Sales, we were in smelly flood waters but the truck has never smelt so clean.

...We got some ODOUR BUSTER at the Beef 2003 Show in April and were using it within the week. We found a dead beast with an ear tag, so I cut off the ear, threw it into my vehicle so I could adjust the records later. Unfortunately, I forgot about the ear until a few days later when I went to jump into the drivers seat - the ear was rotten.
The smell was overwhelming. I sprayed ODOUR BUSTER inside the vehicle and within an hour the air had no odour at all.
I was told the stuff was good but now I'm telling everyone it's GREAT.
Veterinarian Jack Groenendyk, Manly Clinic Brisbane
...ODOUR BUSTER has been used as a general cleaning product in the clinic for a few months. I had the opportunity to really test its effectiveness on a serious odour problem when I had to perform an autopsy on a dog. The aftermath created a vile smell, which reeked through the clinic. The results really surprised me. I have never used a product with such effectiveness before.

We trialled ODOUR BUSTER in the toilets throughout the showgrounds. Within a day the odours that we couldn't get rid of after trying other methods disappeared.
We will certainly be using ODOUR BUSTER again and again.

I have used Odour Buster on our dog kennels for some considerable time now and I am really happy with the results. I also use the product in our stable complex as well. I can thoroughly recommend it for smell control.
